About Dr Johan Hugo

Dr. Johan Hugo is a highly skilled General Practitioner with a special interest in both Aesthetic and Integrative Medicine. He holds an MBBCh from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) and a BSc in Medicine. With over 35 advanced courses in Aesthetic Medicine under his belt, Dr. Hugo has trained with top global experts in the field.
His career highlights include managing a private hospital in
Maputo and serving as the Development Director for Medicross, where he
successfully oversaw the establishment of 55 clinics across South Africa. Dr.
Hugo is now focused on creating the next generation of modern, efficient
medical centers throughout Africa, combining cutting-edge technology with a
holistic approach to patient care.
With a strong foundation in both medicine and business, I have dedicated my career to advancing aesthetic and regenerative medical science in South Africa. I am the founder of Mito Cell (Pty) Ltd, a cutting-edge biotech start-up focused on innovative cellular therapies and medical advancements.
Through Mito Cell, I’ve secured a strategic partnership with Bioviva USA Inc. for the Phase 2 development of gene therapies in South Africa, working closely with regulatory authorities and top universities.
I'm also in the process of launching a Biotechnology Academy in collaboration with Next Biosciences South Africa. This academy will train medical professionals in advanced techniques including whole plasma preparation, PRP, plasma fibrin, and autologous fat-derived stem cell harvesting for use in aesthetic and orthopaedic treatments.
Our work extends into developing topical applications using oxygen carriers, stem cells, and other next-generation technologies to support skin regeneration and rejuvenation.
